WEST BYFLEET SECONDARY SCHOOL SPEECH DAY 1963

CHOOSE CAREERS WISELY SAYS HEADMASTER

“I am not pleased when I see a boy or a girl who has good ‘O’ levels working in something like a chain-store”, said Mr. F.W. Goodger, headmaster of West Byfleet C.S. School at the school’s speech day on Wednesday week.

Mr. Goodger urged parents not to let their children leave the school at the end of the fifth year with “just any old ‘O’ levels”.

“Don’t let them leave until they have collected good ‘O’ levels” he said and added that parents should see that their children used their qualifications correctly.  “We are very proud of what many children from the school have done”, he said.

“Talking about the examination successes in the school, Mr. Goodger said that 96 pupils, out of 106 passed “at least something” in this year’s G.C.E.

The 96 successful pupils passed 327 papers out of 509, involving 18 different subjects.  One person passed eight subjects, three passed seven subjects and 11 pupils passed six subjects.

EXAMINATION COURSES

Mr. Goodger said that in September there were 650 pupils in the school, 126 of whom were remaining on after the age of 15 and 16 years.  Four hundred pupils were concerned with courses leading to external examinations.

At the beginning of the term, said Mr. Goodger, a fifth year ‘B’ steam was introduced into the school, and on November 1st compulsory homework was introduced for these children.

Mr. Goodyer said that he was happy to report a “little building development” with the extension of the engineering workshop.

He said that he was wondering how successful his overtures had been to Woking Education Committee regarding an extension to the existing science laboratory and a moveable class-room to be used as a science laboratory.

“Our school library has been developed, said the headmaster, “and now has 1,500 books, plus county library books always in permanent residence”.

Visits had been made during the year to places of educational interest, he said and during the summer holidays a part of children went to Belgium.   A most encouraging development had been the number of pupils who visited France during the year in connection with the study of French.  Two hundred pupils had, during the year corresponded with French pen-friends,

ACTIVE CLUBS

The school’s societies and clubs had been very active.  The sailing club had a fleet of three dinghies, one large and two small, and sixth form boys were trying to solve the problem of how to build more craft in the engineering workshop.

This year, said Mr. Goodger, a record number of old people received parcels of confectionary and groceries from the School Society, and the school had contributed over £120 to the War on Want Campaign.   A poetry speaking competition had been organised and a junior drama festival introduced into the school.

Three pupils proceeded from the school to take up places in grammar schools, and study for Advanced Level, G.C.E.   Fifteen pupils left the school to take Advanced Level at technical colleges.  In September two former pupils from the school entered university.

Prizes were presented by Mr. B.W.M. Young, headmaster at Charthouse School, Godalming.
