West Byfleet Secondary School: log book for 1937

 

5th April 1937

The new Central school was opened this morning with 295 children on roll.   176 children were transferred from West Byfleet Council School – which becomes a junior school, 89 were transferred from Byfleet C. of. E. school, and 26 from Pyrford Council School.  There were four new entrants.

 

 

Assembly was taken in the Hall and Mr. A.W. Stollery, Chairman of the Managers who was present addressed a few words to the children.

A football match between the staff (men) and the school 1st XI was played at the Recreation ground immediately after school (pm).   Mr. F.A.O. Phillips, County Technical, Woodwork Inspector, who was visiting the school played for the staff.  The match ended in a victory for the staff 5 goals to 2.

 

21st April 1937

Further Schick tests were carried out by Dr. Linzie today.

 

22nd April 1937

Mr. Jenkins attended County Hall Kingston part of this morning and afternoon to assess marks in the Special Place Examinations for children who were unable to attend the examinations held in march.

Mrs. Gunton and Miss King, an applicant for the post of Chief Woman Assistant visited the school today.

Miss J.R. Forrest carried out a dental inspection of children who were transferred from West Byfleet Council School.

 

5th May 1937

The school was closed this afternoon for the official opening which was performed by Mr. Alfred Mizen JP CA, Chairman of the Surrey Education Committee. The program of functions was as follows:

The school was thrown open for inspection by parents and friends and a display of physical exercises was given by a class of girls (Instructress Miss H. Beardwood) and a class of Boys (Instructors Mr. R. Powell).    Some four hundred people attended the ceremony.   Tea was provided in the staff room for the official visitors.

11th May 1937

School closed this afternoon for the coronation celebrations followed by Whitsun holidays.    Each child on leaving was presented with a copy of the Coronation Book and a ticket for tea which is part of the celebrations being held in the Recreation Ground.

 

During the Bank Holiday Monday the school team competed at the Woking Sports Ground organised by the Railway Athletic club.  For the T.E. Russell Shield the boys team were 2nd  in the 400 yards relay.

The District Sports had to be abandoned on Wednesday owing to a thunder storm and the finals were run off this evening.    Representatives from this school won six place medallions.

 

 

The trophies were presented by Miss Hetty Cowen, J.P. (chairman of the Woking school managers)

Sir Arthur Glynn Bart, Chairman of the Elementary Education Committee visited the school this morning.  Immediately after school a match was played (cricket) between staff and the boys 1st XI.  The school team scored 70 all out and the staff 72 for 5.

A manager’s meeting was held in the staff room at 6.00pm this evening.

Fire Drill was carried out this morning and the school completely emptied of children in fifty seconds.  The signal was a blast on a whistle.   The arrangements for exits of children and staff are as follows:

Ground floor: Woodwork Room through store to playground. Hall – direct to playground by exit doors.

Ground Floor a) Room 9, b) Room 10 by Boys exist door, Room 11 by girls exit.  Art room by front exit.

1st floor. In order by boys staircase and boys exist to playground

The children proceed in pairs from rooms to the playground.

Dr. Standring inoculated a number of children today, immunisation against diphtheria.

Fire drill was carried out this morning at 11.45.  The building was evacuated in 61 seconds.

Parish Day.  School Closed.

In the Parish Day Sports a House Relay Race was run for a cup presented by Sir J.E.S. Maclure.   This cup is now the property of the school and is for annual competition, a relay, between a team of two boys and 2 girls from each house.  The race is to be run each year on Parish Day but in the event of Parish Day ceasing to be held – the cup may be used for whatever purpose it is decided by the school.

 

The house which won the cup this year was Maclure House. The team composed of Victor Locke, A. Froome, Margaret James, and Sybil Pearce.

Edward Crouch, James Poynter, Peggy Godding, Elsie Hayward and Bernard Wood have gained special places at County Schools.   Kathleen Reece, Edith Black and Colin Tunbridge are being transferred to the County School as fee payers and two other children are being taken off the roll on removal.

School closed this afternoon for mid-term holiday.

 

During a physical exercise lesson at 2.35pm this afternoon Joan Grant (III T) performing the exercise “Cat Leap” on the box jumped from the box without putting her hands for support.  She caught her hand and broken her arm.   The accident was immediately reported to me.  I rendered first aid and by putting the arm in a splint I took the child to Dr. Godsalve Ward, Station Approach.  We then went to Woking Hospital where an aesthetic was given, the arm set and X-ray photographs taken.

A report of the accident was sent by form and letter to the chief financial officer and the Divisional Officer.

 

A whist drive was held in school on Wednesday evening 27th October.  204 tickets were sold (1/6d) 137 people attended and played whist.   Practically all the refreshments were given by parents – 41 prizes were given by residents, and over 10 donations were also received. The total receipts amount to £27-16-1 and expenditure only £1-1-4.   The balance is being used for the purchase of an Ultra Radiogram £19-14-0.

 

3rd November 1937

School reopened this morning.  Two hundred and one children escorted by six members of the staff and headmaster travelled to Woking to see the films shown at the Astoria cinema in connection with the national health Campaign.

 

The party left school at 9.35am and returned at 11.45.   The children remaining in school were grouped as follows……

Lady Barnes visited the school and inspected the canteen and the school dinner arrangements at midday.  Mr. Jarman visited the school.

 

19th November 1937

The school Choir competed in the Woking Musical Competition festival this morning.   The test piece was a two part song “A Ship that Sails”.   Additional piece “Dawn, Gentle Flowers” . Sterndale Bennet was sung.  Miss King conducted and Mr. Allsopp acted as accompanist.   Honours marks (96) were gained for each piece and the choir in addition was awarded first place in the competition.  A shield was presented by the Woking Herald is held for one year and a Honours Certificate gained also.
