A wood turning lathe has been presented to the school by Mrs. Ricards.

2nd February 1938

The Dress Rehearsal for the school convert, an operetta “The Island of Balkis was held in the school hall this evening at 5.30pm.  Performances will be given on Thursday, Friday and Saturday pm.

Mr. Branzand and Mr. Jones visited the school today and presented two cups.  One is the cup (valued at £25) presented by public subscription to Cyril Hubert Frisby Coldstream Guards to commemorate his winning the Victoria Cross in the War 1914-1918.  Captain Frisby gave the cup to the West Byfleet Boys Club for annual competition.  This club has now closed and the committee have had the cup re-engraved and it will be used for the House Football Competition.

On 27th September, 1918 at the Canal du Nord , near Graincourt, France, Captain Frisby was in command of a company detailed to capture a canal crossing, but when the canal was reached, the leading platoon came under annihilating fire from a strong enemy post under the bridge on the far side of the canal. Captain Frisby with a Lance-Corporal, T N Jackson (also awarded the VC), and two others, climbed down into the canal under intense fire and succeeded in capturing the post with two machine guns and 12 men. Then having consolidated his objective he gave timely support to a company which had lost all its officers and sergeants, organising the defences and beating off a heavy counter-attack.

Between three and four hundred parents visited the school.

In the evening the school team played Walton Central school in the final of the Sparrow cup and were unsuccessful by 2 goals to 1.

Historical Note: Also running in the 880 yards boys under 14 was W. Nankeville of Monument Hill Central School.   He won the race in 2 min 36.2  seconds (similarly the 440 yards was won in 1 min 8.2 seconds by a W. Bush of Goldsworth).   Bill Nankeville was a well known Woking born runner of international esteem who represented Great Britain in both  the 1948 and 1952 Olympics in the 1500 metres.

During the Whitsun holidays the two school Relay Teams competed in the 400 yards Railway Athletic Club Sports held at Woking and each gained 1st place winning the T.E. Russell Shields.

(beating Guildford Grammar ‘A’ , Monument Hill and four other teams)

Barrett, Hugh Wren) gained 1st place and won the challenge shield in the schools relay race (boys).  Girls Relay Team (Beryl Choate, Eileen Adams, Hilary Cole, Sybil Pearce) gained 1st place and won challenge shield in schools relay race (girls).  Schools Relay Team B gained 2nd place.

Mr. Jenkins attended a conference with the chief Education Officer at County Hall this afternoon in connection with the positive closure of schools/evacuation of children and duties of staff in the event of Declaration of War.

A party of 22 boys accompanied by Mr. F. Aves visited Woking Gas Works – Educational visit.

Mr. Jarman visited the school am. Mr. Anderson delivered orders to close the school at 4.00pm and to make preparations to receive children evacuated from London.  These children will be accommodated in the school until they can be billeted in the neighbourhood.  Mr. Sibly visited the school pm.

Evacuation Orders have been cancelled- war having been averted.  Notice has been sent round the district by the Prefects that School will reopen this morning.      All members of the staff attended school this morning leaving immediately after the weekly attendance returns had been completed.

School re-opened this morning.  Mr. Sibley visited the school to re-arrange the P.T. Demonstration for Friday 7th October.

A demonstration of junior and senior P.T. Boys followed by Organised Games was given in the Hall this afternoon 2.00 – 4.00pm.   Mr. F.B. Sibley, County Organiser, Mr. Stollery Chairman of Managers, Miss Holm and Mr. Jones West Byfleet junior school, Mrs. Dean Pyrford junior school, Mr. Eaves Byfleet C. of E. School and children from the four contributory schools were present.  A discussion was held at the conclusion.

County Surveyor and his assistant visited the school in connection with playground flooding.

A party of 31 children accompanied by Mr. Jenkins traveled to Kingston by 9.41 train from Byfleet to attend the Robert Mayer Concert for children at the Regal Cinema Kingston.  The Concert was given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Stanley Chapple.   The attendance was approved by H.M.I. under article 21a of the code.   The program was:

A whist drive was held in School at 7.30pm on behalf of school funds.   Forty seven prizes were given by various friends – the whole of the refreshments by the children’s parents.   174 persons played whist £17-12-2 in all, was taken by sales of tickets, donations and raffles.

The service broadcast from the Cenotaph London was listened to in school.   Recreation was taken 10.30-10.45 am and the children then assembled in the Hall.   Normal time table was followed immediately after the service.

Mr. Jenkins absent from duty this morning from 9.30am attending a meeting of S.E.C. Special Places Examinations Board.  To assist in organisation the timetable for Monday and Tuesday was reversed for this week.

Notifications has been received that Phyllis Dull has been awarded a place in the National Poster Competition held in connection with the Animal Welfare Week.  The poster submitted was work produced during Art lessons in school.   Mr. Jarman visited the school am.

A party of thirty children accompanied by Mr. Allsopp visited Kingston Regal Cinema this morning for the Robert Mayer concert for children.   The party left school at 9.15am catching the 9.41am train to Surbiton and returned by 12.10pm from Surbiton.  The programme given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra – conductor Stanley Chapple was:  Overture  -----

Members of the school care committee meet in school this afternoon.  Present Lady Barnes, Miss Wills, Mrs. Palmer, Mr. Hodgson, Mr. Jenkins.  A resolution asking for the S.C.C. to establish Dental and Medical Clinics at New Haw was passed.

A deputation including Mr. Beloe, Mr. Stollery, Major Finn, Mr. Shipton, Mr. Quarrell, Mr. Anderson visited the school to inspect the ground suggest for playground and garden extension.

A carol concert was given in the school Hall this evening at 7.30pm.   As a result about £17 was paid into the school sports fund.

 

20th December 1938

School closed this afternoon and the annual school party held at 4.00pm.  After the party the children were entertained by Nelson Lloyd, ventriloquist, and three one act plays were performed.

21st December 1938

Miss King, who has signified her intention at getting married, was interviewed at Kingston this afternoon.  Mr. Jenkins was also present.  Miss King was reappointed.

The low attendance was partially caused by having snow fall which made it difficult for children coming from a distance to reach school.    Several frosts have also occurred during the week and many of the pipes in school have been frozen.   They have all been thawed by the caretaker and no bursts have happened.
