Thursday 31st August 1939

Notice was received this morning to prepare the school for reception of children and mothers evacuated from London under government evacuation scheme.

Friday 1st September 1939

The first coach containing 25 boys and four masters and helpers from Southfields Secondary school Wandsworth arrived at school at 10.00am.  The method of reception in this and all following cases was as follows.  The evacuees entered the school hall where they deposited their personal belongings.  They passed then in order to a rest room, medical inspection room and a billeting room where billets were arranged by Mrs. Romanes, Billeting Officer for West Byfleet.   On allotment they recollected personal belongings, were handed rations for two days and then escorted to their billets by members of the Women’s Voluntary Services.    The bags of rations had previously been received at school from offices of the Woking Urban District Council.  The second coach arriving at 10.30 contained children from Brandlelaw Road School Fulham.

Miss George H.M.I. visited the school about 10.50am.  It was obvious that then a serious mistake was being made at the rail head – Woking in breaking up the evacuated schools into groups and dispensing these groups into different parts of the Woking area.

I asked Miss George to go to the railhead to see if the evacuation officer would arrange for complete schools to be sent to one district.   Later Miss George returned with the information that the Evacuation Officer or authority could not or would not alter the organisation which was being carried on.

The last coach arrived at about 4.50pm.

Saturday 2nd September 1939

Reception of evacuees continued throughout the day. Each coach containing children from a different school.  I visited the railhead personally but could not get any satisfaction for altering the procedure.

Sunday 3rd September 1939

Reception continued throughout the day.  War declared on Germany at 11.00am.  This was received by wireless in school at 11.15am.

The last coach reached the school at about 4.45pm.

During the three days of evacuation 257 children from 17 different schools with 29 teachers or helps including 7 head teachers, mothers and children under school age were received and billeted in the district.   I place on record the splendid assistance given by staffs of this school and the junior school, the nurse, the doctor (Major Brown), the billeting officer Mrs. Romanes and the assistances from the WVS for the organisation of reception and billeting of evacuees.

Monday 4th September 1939

School should have been reopened this morning for the autumn term but owing to the National Emergency will remain closed until further orders are received.  One room, however, has been set apart for the use of the Billeting Officer to deal with various problems arising.

Wednesday 6th September 1939

A meeting of all evacuated teachers billeted in West Byfleet was held in the Hall at my invitation.   Problems affecting moral and social welfare of the children were discussed and London teachers undertook to attend to the various matters in connection with their own school.

13th September 1939

Since the date of the last entry the school has been closed for educational purposes the Surrey Educational Committee having noticed that the school must not be opened for congregation of children until adequate shelters have been provided.  This afternoon a meeting of responsible teachers of London School groups was held in school presided over by Mr. Hood Phillips Assistance Education Officer for Surrey.    Mr. Anderson and a representative of the LCC were also present.

A number of matters were discussed but no action taken.

During the closure of the school the staff have attended on certain occasions in order to prepare for the eventual re-opening.    A staff meeting was held this afternoon and arrangements made of the commencement of voluntary classes.

Monday 18th September 1939

As an experiment voluntary classes this week are being held in Needlework, Craft, Bookbinding, Country Dancing, Gardening, Games and Art.  Half the staff attending each day to conduct these classes.   Thirty five children attended this morning, the classes being held from 10-12.

Thursday 21st September 1939

The voluntary classes continued throughout the week but numbers decreased.  In consequence I closed them down after the end of this mornings classes.

22nd September 1939

A meeting of London Head teachers billeted in West Byfleet was held at my invitation in the staff room.  At this meeting Mr. R. Denmark was appointed administrative head of the London School groups which will eventually attend this school for education.

Wednesday 27th September 1939

A circular has been received from the S.E.C. giving authority for the holding of voluntary classes in the school both for London and the Surrey schools.  Not more than four groups of fifteen children in each may be accommodated in the building at one time, the other children given instruction in the open away from the school.

29th September 1939

The staff attended today and arrangements were made for the commencement of the classes.  A circular was sent by post to all parents.   In this I have purposely given no indication that the classes being arranged are voluntary.   In fact I have stated that children must attend on days and times arranged for them.

Monday 2nd October 1939

Classes commenced work this morning.   Mr. R. Bonner has been seconded to the staff from Bushey Central School Raynes Park.  Mr. Bonner has been evacuated to Byfleet with a number of children from Bushy Central School and these children are being absorbed on the roll of this school.

Senior and Junior children will attend on alternate days from 9-12.

The school will be used for London Children from 1.30-3.45pm.  A timetable has been drawn up and file.  By this children will receive instruction in Arithmetic, English, History and Geography, Gardening, Games and will also be taken for nature rambles etc.  During the time – 4 days they are not under instruction they will be given homework to do.

Thursday 5th October 1939
