The following article appeared in the Woking Herald.

The Magic Ruby  Production

A colourful and most enjoyable operetta was produced by the staff and children of the Central School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week “The Magic Ruby”.

Before the show started with the overture, Mr. C.V. Jenkins JP (headmaster) said it was the first entertainment they had produced during the war and he hoped they would all enjoy it as much as they used to.   He mentioned that the revenue from Saturday evening would go to the Surrey School Convalescent Home for children.   Miss. Hutchinson, at the piano, played the overture and accompanied the songs very capably.  Master Dudley Bishop, in the role of Harry Lisle, a clerk in the Government Offices, sang very well indeed, as did his female counterpart Miss June Bartram as Nelly O’Neal, the generally adopted daughter.  An irresponsible trio contributed to the humour – Phillip Smith as the blundering Major General Bangs VC, Harold Thomson, the General’s Irish servant (whose stage “Irish” was ever more amusing when it broke down) and Peter Parker, who gave a brilliant impersonation of a “Heathen Charge” as Ah Sim, the Rahab’s Servant, Miss Margaret Cranston as “Electra”, the Goddess of Light, was outstanding for her daring, and her attendant “Spirits of Light” accompanied her very well in the most intricate dances.

The villain of the peace was capably played by Master Keith Griffiths as the raja the Rakshsha and John Hollbrow was impossibly majestic as the Rajah of Rajajpore.  The misses Mavis Stevens and Rosemarie Bye, as the friends of Neily O’Neil contributed to the pleasing dancing and singing.

Other who took part in the chorus as the “Imps of Darkness” and the “Spirits of Light” were Miss J. Fey, J. Johnson, D. Cook, V. Fish, M. Rensom, M. Evans, D. Drake, P. Heath, C. Payne, N. Dean, D.
