West Byfleet Secondary school: log book for 1947

 

8th January 1947

School reopened with 447 children and a full staff except Mr. Evans who is unwell.

 

17th January 1947

Canteen, kitchen and store cupboards broken into during the night.  The police have been contacted and have the matter in hand.

 

23rd January 1947

A police officer gave a talk on Road Safety to the children in three groups between 9.30 and 10.50.  The timetable adjusted accordingly.

 

3rd February 1947

Mr. Hunt commenced four weeks teaching practice.

 

5th February 1947

Mr. Gould, H.M.I. spent the day with the school.

 

10th February 1947

Miss Wade has been seconded to Egham Hythe Girls School temporally.   Miss Peck on supply vice Miss Wade.

Miss Wade absent attending a course at Walton Girls’ school on Intelligence testing.

Mr. H. Gower, Miss Sykes, H.M.I.’s spent the day in the school.

Mr. F.J. Codling was appointed for P.T. Games to commence duties towards the end of April.

Mrs. McGrath absent pm attending interview for headship at County Hall.

Mr. Evans absent on attending medical examination under Disabled persons Act.

 

20th March 1947

School closed today for the Woking Schools Music Festival.

 

25th March 1947

Miss Edwards and 33 children attended choral speech section of the Wimbledon Music Festival.  The choir was placed 3rd.

 

28th March 1947

School closed after afternoon session until 16th April for Easter Vacation.

 

14th April 1947

School reopened with full staff of 497 children.  During the vacation the canteen, kitchen and store cupboard were forcibly entered with considerable loss due to theft and wilful destruction (7/4/47).    Organised by Mr. Chandler a party of 33 children visited Giswil, Switzerland (31/3/47 – 9/4/47).

 

28th April 1947

Mr. F. J. Coding commenced duty as assistant master teaching Physical Training and Games and Form Master of Prep B.    The timetable has been changed today until further notice in view of Miss Wade leaving on 30th next.

Mrs. Hooper is teaching the girls PT and games.

Mr. Cave taking the boys art not taken by Mrs. Hooper and Mr. Evans, P.A. English and Maths with 2C and 3C.

Mr. Horn and Mr. Millow, from Coopers-Hill commenced four weeks school practice.

 

30th April 1947

Miss Wade resigned from the staff from today.

 

20th May 1947

Mrs. McGrath absent attending interview for Sutton West county secondary school – Headmistress.

The school closed during the afternoon session for the Woking and District Athletic Sports at Kingfield.     The trophies were presented by Miss. H. Cowen.

 

The school scored 6 firsts, 4 seconds and 4 thirds.

A party of four children to attend the Telephone exchange each Tuesday until further notice 11-12am.

Mr. E. M. Winson commenced duties on supply for P.T. and Games.  School closed for church fête.

Mrs. Winson was today appointed to the staff, her appointment to date from 4th June 1947.

Mr. Ward with 24 children from the third year attended Vickers Works during the afternoon session.

24th July 1947

Miss Bailey and colleague, H.M.I.’s visited the school to see Miss Aldridge and discuss the D.S. problems with the Headmaster.

Mr. Cave, Mr. Evans and Miss Gregory were today appointed to the permanent staff.

Miss Galloway seriously cut her hand in the execution of her duties.  The doctor, who was summoned, stitched the cut and she went home at 2.50pm.

25th July 1947

The school was closed today until 2nd September.

2nd September 1947

The school reopened today with a full staff and 466 children – 238 boys and 288 girls.  Miss Gregory commenced duties to specialize in ‘C’ steam English and Scripture.

15th September 1947

Miss Pope, County PT Organiser, called and saw Mrs. Winson.

17th September 1947

Mr. Gower H.M.I. visited and discussed various matters with me, he also notified me that a full inspection of the school would take place early in November.

Dr. Alexderson newly appointed county inspector visited the school and noticed activities of the intended organisation for the school

19th September 1947

Miss Ward resumed duties.

29th September 1947

Mr. Ward absent attending interview in Northern Ireland.

1st October 1947

Mr. Ward resumed duty having been appointed to a post in Northumberland.

14th October 1947

The school was represented today at the funeral of John Goodey, who was killed in a road accident, by four children, Miss Edwards and the Headmaster.

24th October 1947

The school closed today for mid-term break until 3rd November.

10th November 1947

A reporting inspection of the school commenced today.  H.M.I.’s present were Miss Sykes, Messrs. Heath, Goud, Howard, Harry and Moody.

Inspection XXXX with discussion by Inspectors and various members of the staff and finally a Governors’ meeting at which the Headmaster was present.

Mr. W.E. Ward resigned his post as from today as Handicraft master.

Mrs. A. Phee was today appointed to the temporary staff commencing from 1st January next for maths and commercial subjects.

Mrs. Golden, H.M.I. spent the day inspecting the Physical Training and Games.
