9th January 1951

School reopened.  Messrs. Edwards and Eastaugh still absent.   Mr. E.C. Curtis commenced duty in a temporary capacity vice Mr. Lane.

25th January 1951

Mr. Curtis was today appointed to the permanent staff of the school.

31st January 1951

Mr. Higgs spent the afternoon with Mrs. Evans observing French lessons.

5th February 1951

Mr. Brown absent marking Common Entrance Examination Papers.  Miss B.A. Aitcheson commenced duty in a temporary capacity for girls’ physical education.

6th February 1951

Miss king absent during the morning session visiting St. Pauls Girls school for the headship which she has been called for interview.

6th February 1951

Miss M.M.M. Healy and Miss B.A. Aitcheson were today appointed to the staff both for girls’ physical education.  Miss Aitcheson will be appointed as from 5th February. Miss Healy as from 7th May next.

17th February 1951

Messrs. Pavey and Strangeway commenced five weeks school practice from Coopers Hill T.C.

19th February 1951

Miss Temple absent today only attending WRAF interview.

27th February 1951

Mr. Curtis absent attending a county Athletics Course.  Governors meeting.  Mr. Guppy was appointed today to take art etc vice Miss Eastaugh.

6th March 1951

A police officer spoke to the junior half of the school on safety just after when all children’s bicycles on the school premises were inspected in the presence of the child.  Ten children were refused permission to cycle to school until the bicycles were made road worthy.

8th March 1951

Mr. Bassett, Assistant County Inspector, paid a short visit.

9th march 1951

Miss Pains, Assistant County Inspector, paid a short visit.

12th March 1951

Mr. Guppy commenced duty.

15th March1951

The school was closed today for the Woking Schools music festival.  Two school choirs took part.

19th March 1951

During the afternoon session the Headmaster addressed parents of children entering the school next term, the school was afterwards open for their inspection.

The Rev. Costin and Mr. Nichols, School Governors visited the school during the morning.

After school in the afternoon the school was assembled in the School Hall in two parts.  Prizes were present to two children in each of the juniors forms, inter House games results were announced and the cups presented.   Prizes were presented to the Head Boy, James Blackwood and Head Girl, Yvonne Miller, on conclusion of their turn of office.  The new Head Boy, Clarence White and Head Girl, Una Barrett, were announced.

Presentation of cheques, subscribed by staff and children were then made to Miss L. Eastaugh and Miss P. Temple who are leaving the staff today.

 

The assembly concluded with hymn and prayers after which the school closed until 9th April 1951.

9th April 1951

The school reopened with a full staff - with the exception of Miss Healy due to start on 7th May 1951.  Miss McGrath resumed and 712 children.  Owing to the enormous increases in a numbers a complete reorganisation of the school has been introduced.   The Easter Admission from the Primary Schools has been divided into two forms 1, 1A and 1B.  The September intake into forms 1X, 1Y.  Remove is retained and a room in the British Legion has been taken for their use.    The remainder of the school, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year is organised into four streams.

Mrs. McGrath absent pm visiting St. Matthews C.E. School for the Headship of which she has been invited for interview.

17th April 1951

Mrs. McGrath absent all day visiting hospital and attending interview pm.

27th April 1951

Miss O Edwards is absent to enter hospital for an ear operation.  Mrs. Jenkins commenced on supply in her places.  Mrs. Evans absent attending a French course.

7th May 1951

Mrs. Healy commenced duty on the permanent staff for Physical Education. 3B and C girls visited a Food Hygiene Exhibition with Misses Taylor and Floor during the afternoon session.

11th May 1951

School closed today until 21st May for the Whitsun vacation.

The school reopened with a full staff.

The school closed during the afternoon session for the Woking and District Athletic Sports.    Mr. W. (Bill) Nankeville  presented the trophies.

Mr. Jones, H.M.I., visited the school and saw Messrs. Penn and Semple.   Mr. Basset, County Tech. Inspector, visited to see Messrs. Blanshand and Cave.

Mr. Higgs, assist. C. Inspector, discussed possible courses of study when the school divides on completion of the new building in Selsdon Road.

Miss Miller absent for this week attending a needlework course at Gypsy Hill Training College.

A party of second year children visited the South Bank Festival with five staff (110 children).

12th July 1951

A similar party from the third year with the Headmaster and five staff with 124 children visited the festival.

Today the fourth year (114) went with six staff.

During the afternoon the school annual Athletic sports were held on the school field.  Mr. Nicholls, Governor, presented the cup to McClure, the winning House.

Open afternoons have been held for various age groups throughout the school with one for parents of children to be admitted next term.

27th July 1951

The school closed today after the final assembly until 4th September.   Mrs. Jenkins ceased duty on supply and Mr. Lark begins one years leave of absence to take a history course.

4th September 1951

The school reopened with 700 children.  Miss Edwards returned.  Mr. K. Allison took over the duties of Mr. Lark.   Mr. K. Greenwood came into the staff supernumerary to take mathematics.

10th September 1951

Miss Taylor absent one week taking a refresher course.

Miss Taylor resumed.

18th September 1951

Home office House – Fathers and Mothers on a course at Brooklands Technical College visited the school in parties during the day see to how a modern secondary school works.

19th September 1951

During the past two periods of the afternoon the senior half of the school was given a concert in the school hall by the military band of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhust, under the conductor, Lt. Thistle (Director of Music).

28th September 1951

Mr. Chandler ceased duty in the school today.   He was presented with a wrist watch at the end of the afternoon school on behalf of staff and children and a fountain pen by his form.

5th October 1951

Mrs. Hooper absent until 3pm attending an interview for deputy headship.

9th October 1951

Miss McGrath absent to an accident at her home.

1st October 1951

Mr. G. B. Roberts and Mr. B. Hill, first year students from Shoreditch training College commenced three weeks observation and teaching practical.

During the last hour of the afternoon Mr. Pabs, Imperial Institute Lecturer, gave a most interest talk to the seniors on “Bywinds Journey to Australia”.

Messrs. Belston and Kelsey commenced three weeks school practise from Shoreditch T.C.

28th November 1951

The Preliminary of the Common Entrance Examination was held during the afternoon session; those children not taking the examination being given a half day holiday.

30th November 1951

Mrs. Jenkins concluded her supply duties today.

3rd December 1951

Mrs. McGrath returned today.  Mr. P.J.G. Browning commenced duty here – being seconded from Monument Hill C. Secondary School at the request of the assistant county inspector for probation purposes.

7th December 1951

Messrs. Belsten and Kelsey complete three weeks school practice.

18th December 1951

The school choir conducted by Miss Ward gave a nine lesson Carol Service in St. John’s Church to a packed congregation during the evening.

20th December 1951

The school closed until 8th Jan 1952.  Miss Healy left to be married, Mr. Browning’s secondment ended.
