West Byfleet Secondary school: log book for 1954

6th January 1954

School reopened.

Mr. J.P. Weston commenced duty as a supernumerary on the staff and Miss B.E. Du Paer commenced duty in a temporary capacity.

11th January 1954

Mr. Grunwood absent during the afternoon attending appointment interview.

14th January 1954

Mr. Grunwood absent during the afternoon attending an appointment interview.   He was appointed to Morden Farm C. Se. School staff as from the beginning of next term.

21st January 1954

The school was closed today in order that the Common Entrance Examination was held.  A substitute staff from other schools invigilated and marked the 1356 worked scripts in English, Arithmetic and Intelligence and the Essays.   Marking ended at 7.45pm and the “statistics” work was completed by 8.35pm.

22nd January 1954

Mr. Curtis ceased duties on the staff on entering the R.A.F.  He was presented with suitable gifts from the boys and the staff.

19th February 1954

The school closed today till 24 February for mid-term holidays.

1st March 1954

Mrs. Taylor absent today only – leave of absence granted without pay.

5th March 1954

Mr. Higgins visited the school to discuss the problems associated with annual promotions from the primary schools and other matters.

8th March 1954

Mr. Allison absent with chicken pox.

9th March 1954

The primary Heads met me here to discuss annual promotions.  It was decided that children who will be 11 years by 31/5/54 will be transferred after Easter.  The age of transfer at the beginning of the Autumn Term was referred to the Divisional Education Officer.  This was later decided on as 10 9/12 on first day of the Autumn Term.

12th March 1954

I was today appointed by the Education Committee to be Headmaster of Fullbrook County Secondary School from the beginning of the Autumn Term 1954.

Governor’s Meeting.  Mr. A.A. Henry was appointed to the staff of Fullbrook C. Secondary school as from 31/8/54.

2nd April 1954

Miss Floor absent from today for the remainder of the term having leave of absence without pay to get married.

9th April 1954

The school closed today until 28th April.

28th April 1954

The school reopened.  Mr. Davies commenced duty on the permanent staff (top transfer to Fullbrook next Autumn Term).  He is taking 1st and 2nd years Maths previously taken by Mr. Drawneck the later transferring to Mr. Grunwood’s timetable.   Mrs. Morely commenced duties on supply vice Mrs. Alexander for general form subjects.

4th May 1954

Mrs. Elvidge absent attending an athletics course.   The school was closed during the morning session to be used as a centre for the second examination of Common Entrance.  Members of staff acted as invigilators.

10th May 1954

Mr. Garnham commenced duty on supply.

11th May 1954

153 children and 2 staff attended the Odeon Cinema, Guildford for the Everest Lecture arranged by the SCC.

25th May 1954

Miss Du Pieury was absent today attending an interview for a post.

Mr. Goodger was today appointed to be Headmaster of this school from the beginning of next term.

2nd June 1954

Woking and District School Sports 1954

 

The school was closed for the Woking and District school sports.  The school teams won both the girls and boys Athletic Championships cups thus adding to the Senior Football League shield, the Junior League and Junior football challenge cups.    I would like to pay tribute to the tremendous work done towards the above by Mrs. Elvidge and Mr. Evans and Messrs. Elvridge and Allison.

Four boys B. Gathercole, R. Taylor, F. Wright and M. Mitchell have played for the County Cricket Team.  Gathercole has been awarded his County Cap.

Miss. Du Pacey resumed.   Form 2E with Mr. Garnham visited the London Museum and Imperial Institute for the day.

W.J. Bean absent for two and a half days on the 13+ appeals panel with the County Inspector.

20th July 1954

Remove with Mrs. Bryson visited Hampton Court during the afternoon.  The school cricket XI defeated St. Bedes, Send in the final of the Woking and District Cricket competition and won the cup.

22nd July 1954

The school closed at the end of the afternoon session to enable the full staff to re-arrange class rooms, furniture etc. tomorrow because from the beginning of next term on 31st August the school divides into two.  The West Byfleet, Pyrford and Byfleet children remain here and those living to the north of the line from Sheerwater Road, the Basingstoke Canal and then along the railway to West Weybridge will transfer to Fullbrook C. Secondary School.

Mr. Jarvis and Mr. Higgins called today to discuss the possibility of an Engineering course in the future.

I visited County hall at 3.30pm to see Mr. Anderson to discuss the provision of Equipment for the proposed Engineering Course (granted at the Estimates Comm. Meeting 17/9/54).

A hygiene inspection was held.   An Amateur Dramatic Society was formed today.

16th September 1954

About 250 children attended the showing of the file “Dust or Destiny” at 3.45pm.

20th September 1954

A Red Cross Link formed to operate on Monday Evenings.

22nd September 1954

At a meeting of the Appointments Committee Miss Joan Ward was appointed Deputy Head of this school.

23rd September 1954

P.E. Club formed to meet on Thursday evenings (Other clubs now in being “C.A.T.”, School Choir, Studio).

24th September 1954

Miss Osborn absent due to a slight leg accident necessitating her attendance at hospital.

Mr. Jones, Chief Education officer, brought Mr. Walkins Tout, Inspector of Schools for Hong Kong to spend the day here.    Mr. Win and I attended the Primary School Harvest Festival at 3pm.

A party of 4a girls visited the S.E. Electricity Board Cookery Demonstration this morning.

13th October 1954

A medical exam for “Easter Leavers” was held this am.

A meeting of parents and the staff re: the Engineering Course was held 4-5.0pm.   Mrs Wincott took a party (Netball team) to Wimbledon banks for coaching.

A Dancing club and a studio club have now been formed.

Mr. cave and I met parents in the school 6.30pm – 8pm to discuss the Engineering Course which starts in January.

I left the premises at 2.20pm to attend the official opening of the new Sheerwater Secondary School.   Two girls selected for final County Trail last Saturday (6/11/54).

A party of 4a and 4c boys visited Vickers Armstrong at Weybridge this afternoon.

10th November 1954

A lecture, “40,000 miles by Cairn". New Zealand was given by Mrs. Couper of the Imperial Institute teaching staff.

(Saturday) party visited the intermediate Folk Dancing display at Guildford.

Mr. Hobbs coached the senior and junior football teams in the afternoon.    A staff meeting was held 3.45pm to 5.00pm.  Talk to Easter leavers 9.30 to 10.40am.

3rd December 1954

B.C.G. vaccinations this am (9.30).

Miss Adams, County Inspector, called to discuss History and Geography schemes at 2pm.  A Dancing Club now has been formed.

6th December 1954

B.C.G. Vaccinations at 1.30pm.

The timetable has been modified from time to time to allow the rehearsals of the school production of “The Windmill Man” and the service of nine lessons and carols.

8th December 1954

P.C. Walter inspected the bicycles of those who cycled to school.

I left the school at 1.50pm to a attend a Governor’s Meeting at Sheerwater C.S.S.

13th December 1954

A meeting of 70 parents of the boys taking the Engineering course took place at 7pm.

I had to reprimand Miss Osborn for absenting herself from the hall where she was on duty and from going to the staff room to smoke.
