Schools’ Boxing Championships

Peter Tindall boxed F. Legrange of Southampton, wining on points.  This was a very good bout for the boxing connoisseurs, neat and cleaver boxing and fast work by both boys had the large crowd on their toes.

It was a good win for Peter Tindall who now moves forward to the Great Britain schools semi-finals in Hastings on 3rd March 1973.

The following article appeared in the Woking News and Mail in November 1973 and could well have been entitled the “Marshall Plan”

County favours closure of school

The idea of children being scattered among schools in the district instead of being able to go to school in West Byfleet was criticised last week, when an attempt was made to persuade the county education committee members to reconsider the closure of West Byfleet Secondary School.

Speaking at Surrey Education Committee’s meeting on Friday last week, Mrs. Margaret Marshall spoke of the strong feeling in her district about the need for a community school.

But the committee decided to stick to their earlier recommendation that the school should be closed and that from September 1975 children should go to other schools in the area.

Mrs. Marshall spoke out against the size of schools which children would now have to attend.   About 620 pupils went to West Byfleet, said Mrs. Marshall.     But the Fullbrook County Secondary School would be increasing to 1,200 in 1975, and the Sheerwater County Secondary School would have 1,000.

Mrs. Marshall asked members to take note “of the very strong feeling over large school” and to bear in mind the chance of re-considering a new school in the West Byfleet area in the future.

Parents of pupils at the West Byfleet School have objected to the size of schools to take their children when their present school closes.

Mrs. Marshall also referred to a traffic hazard near Fullbrook School.  She said there was a bad bridge and footpath in the area which should be looked at.
