Mr. C.V. Jenkins, J.P. of Trehane, Oak End Way, Byfleet, headmaster of West Byfleet County Secondary School, has been appointed divisional executive education officer for the Central Division of Surrey.  In consequence he has resigned his membership of the Chertsey Urban Council, and on Tuesday appreciation of his services was expressed by the chairman, Mr. W.V. Presentation to retiring Headmaster

––––––––––––––

Breaking up for the holidays was marked by the advent of many changes at West Byfleet County Secondary School.    The scholars had to say goodbye to their headmaster (Mr. C.V. Jenkins, J.P.), Mr. V. C. Allsopp and Mr. C.S. Finbow, all of whom had been at the school since its opening eight years ago.   Mr. C.V. Jenkins has been appointed to the control of the central division of Surrey under the new scheme, Mr. Allsopp to be headmaster at the Central School, Barnes, and Mr. Finbow headmaster of Bagshot Lea School.

On Friday advantage was taken of the occasion to make presentations to two teachers.   The chairman of the managers (Mr. A.W. Stollery) presided at the special assembly, supported by Miss Leslie and Mrs. Avern (managers).

Mr. Stollery said, that was a sad day for the school, marking the departure not only of those three men whom they loved and respected, but also the return of the evacuated teachers, who had been with them all through the war, from London, and who had mixed with them, helped them and loyally supported everything that was best in the school.   But there was one bright spot, and they should be proud indeed that all three had been promoted –a real tribute to the school.  It would mean that the school would be hard put to it for a time, but with work and service they would restore the situation.

Mr. Stollery then handed Mr. Jenkins, on behalf of the staff and scholars, a cheque for £50, together with a book containing the names of all, and thanked him for what he had done for the school and its uplift, the keen work and endless hours he had put in, and wished him Godspeed in his new sphere of work.

Mr. Jenkins said wherever he went he would try and carry with him the picture he could see in front of him.   No man ever had greater loyalty than he had had from his staff or the scholars, and it nearly broke his heart to leave them.  He thanked all for the tribute.

Mr. Stollery then handed Mr. Finbow a gift, and also gifts to the evacuated teachers, Mr. Hansford, Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Ansell, who replied, thanking the scholars and regretting their departure from Byfleet.  Mr. Allsopp received his appointment only the day before.

The new headmaster at West Byfleet is Mr. H. W. Bean, formerly headmaster of Frensham Church of England School, who will live in Queen’s Avenue Byfleet, and who takes up his duties on August 29th.  He was chosen at Kingston from many candidates by Mr. W. Davies, Miss Hetty Cowen, J.P. and Cclr. H. S. Cawsey sitting with the County Committee.
